There are hundreds of thousands of visitors (including film crews and newspaper reporters) to the district each year. They think they know the world of the windows.

He pays 50 euros. They undress. She sucks, he fucks (this is the language of the girls in the windows). He comes (maybe he doesn't). They dress. He leaves. He records this encounter in a diary.

After a while, he has written over 500,000 words in several diaries (because this simple act of consensual adult sex never results in the same experience twice). Having visited more girls than work in the windows on a Saturday night, a book is born. It arrives in the world fully formed, with arms and legs, wings and horns.
But why would you do it? Write, that is. I had a thought. It might not be a good thought, but it was this. Let's suppose that you bought a house (anywhere in the world). In the attic, in a corner, you discovered a box. In the box were some books. On close examination you realised that they were the memoires of a man living in Amsterdam in 1850 - 1855. They detailed his experiences with Dutch prostitutes in De Wallen. What would you do? Would you destroy them and wallow in disgust, or would you treat them as historical treasure? Whatever - time is treasure.

It is not a clever thing to have done - but it is what it is, and it is definitely autobiographical. In research terms (probably the most extensively documented primary research into the prostitute-client transaction and relationship), it is an example or orthographic writing or participant observation. Of course, you have to remember everyone has a stake in their own research results! I recently read that all biography (maybe he said memoire) is prostitution (Julian Assange) - unfortunately Google auto-translated this page from Dutch to English with some catastrophic results. I'm not sure that I agree, but if it is, I guess that the content is very appropriate in this instance.

Inevitably, the diary is sexually explicit and sometimes the language used is crude. If you are not eighteen years old (you probably you can't read this), it follows that you should not continue with this site. I am currently working through a regime of self-censorship.

The diary extracts from First window girl onwards are sequential. Sometimes a sidebar title is a chapter within-a longer diary entry (for example, PQ 160 or Cindy, incidentally ). Sometimes a title represents a complete day. Sometimes it refers to a single incident with one girl (and so on, and so on).
The diary entries are in chronological order. If you see Interview, you know that this is the start or what I will call articles - ie, stuff about prostitution; things which happen to be going through my head at the time! Sometimes it is about the Amsterdam red light district, sometimes it's more general.
Personally, I would read / recommend Real Girlfriend Experience , The Honey Spot , The Sex Factor , Porn Girlfriend Experience and Kiss And Tell as starters. Of course, it also makes sense to read the entries in chronological order!
